When Parents are Engaged in Education, Student Achievement Increases



What is parent engagement? Why is it important? What are the most effective ways for parents to get involved at home and at school?

Parent engagement occurs when parents partner with educators to help their children learn in school and at home. Research shows that children do better in school when parents are involved in their education.

When parents are engaged, no matter what their income or background, students are more likely to earn higher grades, have better behaviour and social skills, and continue their education to a higher level. Most importantly, parent engagement improves a child’s overall achievement by supporting that child’s success at school — leading to a brighter future.

Parent engagement may take many forms and includes a range of activities.

Here are some examples:
