Parent engagement occurs when parents partner with educators to help their children learn in school and at home. Research shows that children do better in school when parents are involved in their education.

When parents are engaged, no matter what their income or background, students are more likely to earn higher grades, have better behaviour and social skills, and continue their education to a higher level. Most importantly, parent engagement improves a child’s overall achievement by supporting that child’s success at school — leading to a brighter future.

Parent engagement may take many forms and includes a range of activities.

Here are some examples:

• Talk to your child about school
• Learn what homework your child is expected to do
• Meet with your child’s teachers
• Turn everyday activities into learning opportunities
• Volunteer with activities, social and sporting events or as part of your school council
• Attend parent-teacher conferences and parent information night
• Read parent newsletters
• Visit one of the new Parenting and Family Literacy centres opening across Ontario
• Learn about the Provincial Parent Board
• Learn about Parents Reaching Out (PRO) Grants
