DISCIPLINE

KLDCS DISCIPLINE PLAN (abridged)

Students who behave respectfully, are punctual and come to classes prepared, succeed.

If problems occur in classrooms, action will be taken by the classroom teacher. If problems persist, further action will be taken, including a phone call home, office referral and student monitor forms.

The Code of Behaviour is consistent with Ministry of Education and District School Board Ontario North East Codes. As much, in the event of a lack of clarity, the Ministry and Board codes take precedence.

DETENTIONS

Teachers may assign detentions. It is the responsibility of the students to be on time for classes and for school and to be prepared with the required materials. Failure to attend will be treated as truancy and the truancy policy will be administered.

K.L.D.C.S. CODE OF BEHAVIOUR

Schools work best when there is open and ongoing communication between:

Parents and Students

Students and Teachers

Teachers and Parents

This Code of Behaviour has been designed to inform all involved what is expected, the reasons, and the results.

If students or parents have any questions please feel free to call the school at 567-4981.

The following is the Code of Student Behaviour, adopted by District School Board Ontario North East for the students of KLDCS.

Staff, students, parents, trustees and community citizens have developed this code of student behaviour to reinforce appropriate conduct that will serve students well in school and for life. We are committed to providing students with the best education possible and know students will take pride in helping to maintain this commitment.

A KLDCS Student Shall:

  • be diligent in attempting to master such studies as are part of the program in which the pupil is enrolled,
  • exercise self discipline,
  • accept such discipline as would be exercised by a kind, firm and judicious parent,
  • attend classes punctually and regularly,
  • be courteous to fellow pupils and obedient and courteous to teachers,
  • be clean in person and habit
  • take such tests and examinations as are required under the Education Act or as may be directed by the Education Minister,
  • show respect for school property.

Students who become involved in areas of problem behaviour will be subjected to one or more disciplinary actions. The record of a student's past behaviour will be considered before taking action.

It should be noted that some situations may require the involvement of outside agencies, i.e., police, courts, etc.

What can you as a Parent/Guardian expect from the school?

You can expect:

  • To be informed by the subject teacher about what your child will be learning during the school year (the Course of Study Outline),
  • To be regularly informed of your child's progress through the Report Card process or the Special Progress Report that you can request.
  • To be informed about the school's expectations.
  • To be informed of the school's Code of Behaviour.
  • To be made aware of behavioural or social concerns.
  • To see the Ontario Student Record Card (OSR).

Students need guidance and support from home. In order that our Code of Behaviour works as intended, parents must play a crucial role in the school related lived of their sons/daughters.

What can you as a Parent/Guardian do to ensure your child's success?

  • Encourage regular attendance. (call the school at 567-4981 if your child will be absent)
  • Encourage respect for self, fellow students, staff and others.
  • Help your child develop responsibility for his/her action and behaviour.
  • Inform the school of health issues.
  • Ensure your child comes to school ready to learn each day (well-rested, well-nourished, homework done, and with a positive attitude).
  • Stress safety on buses (where appropriate).
  • Contact the school (teacher first, then the principal if necessary) when you have a concern.
  • Work together with school personnel to solve concerns or problems.
  • Support the school by volunteering, attending events and parents' nights, joining the School Advisory Council or the many other parent groups which contribute to school success

If you as a Parent/Guardian or Student, have a concern when a teacher is involved...

  • Call KLDCS at 567-4981 and make an appointment with that teacher to discuss the matter.
  • If needed, seek the assistance of a Guidance Counselor, Resource teacher, Child & Youth Worker or Vice-Principal (567-4981).
  • If the problem is still unresolved, make an appointment with the Vice-Principal or Principal.
  • Although almost every problem is settled in Steps 1 or 2, and the certainly by referral to the Vice-Principal in Step 3, if the problem is not resolved, consider referring it to the Principal.
  • The last option is addressing your concern to the Regional Superintendent of District School Board Ontario North East, #198022 River Road, RR 1, New Liskeard, Ontario  P0J 1P0 (1-900-461-8759/705-647-7394)

In our commitment to students and student learning, KLDCS will provide:

  • a safe and healthy school environment, both physical and social:
  • for each student's needs;
  • Instructional Assessment and Evaluation techniques that address student learning styles and accurately report student progress;
  • a respectful school atmosphere and a response to student needs in a professional manner.

Students must be prepared to take responsibility for their actions and/or choices:

Should serious situations arise, students must be prepared to accept the consequences of their actions or choices. The student will be removed from the classroom environment immediately and one or more of the following steps will be taken:

  • referral to Administration
  • parents/guardian will be contacted
  • appropriate agency or police may be contacted
  • appropriate consequences will be applied in accordance with District School Board Ontario North East and Ministry Policies.
