Welcome to Student Services and Guidance at K.L.D.C.S.
Students Services provides a variety of services to support students while they are enrolled in secondary school. We help to support all students during their secondary school experience. We support all grade 9 students in with their transition to secondary school from elementary schools.Guidance staff: - meet with grade 8 teachers, and students to help choose the appropriate courses for incoming grade 9 students.
- organizes a grade 8 parent and student night at KLDCS where parents and students get a brief overview of the variety of courses at KLDCS. Graduation requirements, and course types are explained at this time. Students and parents also tour the school, to familiarize themselves with the school's layout.
- arrange a "This is Me in Grade 9 Day" where students visit KLDCS, and have the opportunity to experience a day of secondary school, and to actually experience grade 9 classes.
- meet with grade 9 students early in the fall to see how their transition to secondary school is going. Time table adjustments are made as needed, as well as finding and arranging additional supports if needed.
- provide counselling services to students as needed.
We then support students throughout their secondary experience as they choose a pathway and work towards following that destination. Guidance staff: - help students determine and follow their chosen pathway of workplace, college, or university. In grade 10 students develop a career focus, which is then used to choose the appropriate courses to help students make it to that destination.
- help students choose courses each spring for the following year. Course changes are also provided as needed if a pathway changes, or a student is unsuccessful with a course.
- provide counselling services to students as needed.
Finally, we help students as they transition to their chosen destinations.Guidance staff: - provide an exit program to help students transition to the workplace, college, or university.
- help students choose the appropriate college program, and how to apply to that program. The same service is provided for students pursuing a university education.
- help students with applying to scholarships and bursaries for their first year in college or university.
- arrange for interested students to attend the college and university fair days. As well, they co-ordinate visits to KLDCS by college and university recruiters.
- arrange and facilitate graduation ceremonies.
