Workplace Information for Students Planning to Enter the Workforce after High School. OYAP The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) offers Ontario secondary school students the opportunity to train as registered apprentices while still enrolled in school. It allows a student to complete his or her Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and to gain apprenticeship training towards a Certificate of Qualification with journeyperson status in a skilled trade. There are over 130 careers in which students can explore and earn apprenticeship hours while earning a credit towards their diploma. One can simply be exploring the career, or can actually become a registered apprentice while earning high school credits. Possible careers in the skilled trades may include; electrician, plumber, welder, automotive service technician, cook, early childhood educator, hair stylist, and child & youth worker to mention a few. OYAP begins with a cooperative education placement in any one of the skilled trades areas. This provides students with the opportunity to gain work experience in a skilled trade. If the student wishes to pursue registration in the trade, this generally occurs in grade 12 when a second placement is undertaken, the student is registered and the formal apprenticeship period begins. Should the student not be registered at this time, the hours in placement can be applied to the apprenticeship at a later date. To be eligible for an apprenticeship in a skilled trade area, the student must: - have successfully completed 16 high school credits towards the OSSD
- be enrolled as full-time students during the program
- complete all compulsory credits required for the OSSD
Any skilled trade may be accessed through a cooperative education placement. Students are asked to see the cooperative education teacher, their guidance counselor or the technology teacher for more information. Please note: Planning needs to begin at least one semester before admittance to OYAP. *Each individual chart is avaliable at the bottom of the page for download in Micorsoft Word and Corel WordPerfect formats.
