Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) Requirements
To earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), students entering grade 9 must earn a minimum of 30 credits that include 18 compulsory credits and 12 optional credits. Students must also complete 40 hours of community involvement activities, and pass the provincial Grade 10 Literacy test. By combining compulsory and optional courses, students will be provided with the essential knowledge and skills they need to function effectively in many areas. The program will also provide students with the opportunity to get the special knowledge and skills they will need to succeed after high school.
The following lists includes the compulsory credits required to earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma:
4 English (1 per grade) 1 French as a second language 3 mathematics (at least 1 in grade 11 or 12) 2 science 1 Canadian history 1 Canadian geography 1 arts 1 health and physical education .5 civics .5 career studies
PLUS:
1 additional English OR a third language OR social sciences and the humanities OR Canadian and world studies
1 additional health and physical education OR the arts OR business studies
1 additional science (grade 11 or 12) OR technological education (grades 9–12)
In addition to the 18 compulsory credits listed above, students must also earn 12 optional credits.
Ontario Secondary School Certificate (OSSC) Requirements
The Ontario Secondary School Certificate (OSSC) will be granted upon request to qualifying students who leave school before earning the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. To qualify, students must earn a minimum of 14 credits that include 7 compulsory and 7 optional credits.
Compulsory credits will include:
2 English 1 Canadian geography OR Canadian history 1 mathematics 1 science 1 health and physical education 1 arts OR technological education
Certificate of Accomplishment
The Certificate of Accomplishment may be granted to those students who leave school before fulfilling the requirements for the OSSD or the OSSC. This certificate may be a useful means of recognizing achievement for students who plan to take certain vocational programs or other kinds of training, or who plan to work after leaving school.
